Join us for a discussion on the underrecognized barriers to eating disorder treatment. Featuring panelists with diverse expertise in the field, this webinar will delve into conversations regarding the relationships between eating disorders and food insecurity, gender identity, and more. Targeted at current health professionals and students, this webinar aims to address biases in the healthcare field and provide health care providers guidance when treating patients with eating disorders or disordered eating.

This webinar is free to attend thanks to support from the Crabtree Foundation. However, as a not-for-profit charity Hopewell encourages participants to donate if they are able.

Meet the Moderator

Christopher Vallee was born with a natural curiosity and a drive to make a difference. That curiosity led Chris to a career in journalism, where he worked to amplify voices that were not being heard. Through the years he's held various roles within the Canadian media industry, showcasing his skills as a storyteller and communicator.

Chris' journey hasn't been without barriers. From 2012 to 2019, he battled an eating disorder, yet, through patience, perseverance and the support of his family and his team at CHEO, he came out on top.

Today, Chris is on a mission to break the stigma surrounding eating disorders and mental health by using his voice as a powerful tool for advocacy and education. Chris aims to instill hope and reassure those who are struggling that recovery isn't only possible but achievable.

Meet the Panelists

  • Kelly Spence

    RD, RKin, IOC Dip Sport Nutrition

    Kelly is a Weight Inclusive, HAES, Anti-Diet Registered Dietitian with an exercise science and education background who specializes in Eating Disorders, Disordered Eating and Sports Nutrition. She has worked at The Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario for 12 years with 8 of those on the Eating Disorders Team. Kelly has contributed to many research projects and papers in the areas of Exercise Science, Nutrition and Eating Disorders over the years while running a private practice on the side. Kelly is passionate about helping people heal their relationship with food, body and movement.

  • Shari Mayman

    Psychologist

    Dr. Shari Mayman is the co-founder and co-director of Anchor Psychological Services, a private practice in Ottawa. She has been a registered psychologist since 2006. Before founding Anchor with Dr Katherine Henderson, Dr. Mayman was a staff psychologist at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, specializing in the assessment and treatment of eating disorders. She continues to work extensively with individuals with eating disorders and their families within her clinincal practice. Dr. Mayman is active in training health professionals in eating disorder assessment and treatment locally, provincially, and internationally and is committed to increasing access to ED treatment through professional education. She is also a certified supervisor and trainer in Emotion-Focused Family Therapy, an approach that aims to include and empower caregivers in the treatment of their loved ones with eating disorders and other mental health issues.

  • Jennifer Brown

    MSc., RD, CBE

    Jennifer is a registered dietitian and certified bariatric educator at the Ottawa Hospital Bariatric Centre of Excellence and a part-time consultant. She specializes in bariatric nutrition using a weight-inclusive lens to support individuals clinically appropriate for metabolic/bariatric surgery. Currently, Jennifer is a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of Obesity Canada and steering committee member on the James Lind Alliance (JLA) Obesity Care in Canada Priority Setting Partnership, which explores persons’ lived experiences and prioritizes uncertainties about obesity care in Canada. Jennifer is involved in several working groups and advocacy efforts, including coordinating the Canadian Obesity Advocacy Network, contributing to a National Obesity Care Framework with Obesity Canada and representing Canada at international policy and advocating networks. She is passionate about changing professional education and our healthcare system’s approach to how we understand and talk about weight, health and nutrition.
